Jamie Oliver’s language Essay Example for Free

Jamie Oliver’s language Essay In this essay I am going to be talking about the different aspects of Jamie Oliver’s language and how he adapts and uses these language features in his TED speech.Jamie Oliver successfully uses many language devices in order to help him communicate with his audience. I will be looking at Oliver’s and examining how effective it is and also some features of spontaneous speech, which are shown in the speech.Firstly, I am going to look at Jamie Oliver’s planned and prepared language that he uses. Oliver has obviously taken time to adapt his lexis to suit his American audience.Phrases such as â€Å"health care bills† and â€Å"dollars† are some examples of this. Using these Americanisms would ensure that his audience understands the full message that he is trying to put across to them. If he used phrases such as â€Å"pounds† it would weaken the emphasis he is making he could not have full communication with his audience, as they would struggle to understand the extent of his message. Next, there is a strong display of socialect and idiolect in Jamie Oliver’s spontaneous speech. This shows that even though he has adapted some of his lexis and thought about what he is going to say, he often switches to spontaneous speech and his socialect and idiolect come through. An example of this is â€Å" aint†. As this is a very-English word, it shows that this would be part of Oliver’s spontaneous speech. However it may also have been planned as it shows that even though he is trying to adapt to suit his audience he may have used â€Å"ain’t† to keep his identity and also make his speech more engaging.Pauses are a common prosodic feature in Jamie Oliver’s speech. Often used subconsciously, they are slight breaks in speech that can be used in spontaneous speech for the speaker to think about what they are going to say next, but also can be planned in order to add effect. An example of are long pause is â€Å"let’s be honest guys,(0.5) you aint got that cash.† This is a clear example of using pauses to add effect. Its hows that Oliver is passionate about the subject he is talking about and adding as light humourous edge to his talk.All these are features that Jamie Oliver uses in his speech, whether it be spontaneous or planned. Each one has a specific effect and adds to his speech. Altogether I have found that these features are integral to the success of his speech and enhance the message he is bringing to his audience.

Cigarette Smoking The effects of cigarette smoking can be horrifying. Smoking is dangerous not only to those who smoke, but to non-smokers and unborn children as well. Cigarette smoking is also physically and socially harming.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The large particles in cigarette smoke, commonly known as â€Å"tar†, collect in the branching points of the lungs. The tar contains carcinogenic compounds that increase the risk of lung cancer. The small particles in cigarette smoke, including carcinogens, irritants, and corrosive chemicals, collect in the small air sacs in the lungs and damage them. These air sacs are where the blood absorbs oxygen from the air. When the small particles from the cigarette smoke are absorbed into the blood stream and transported to other parts of the body, they include a variety of diseases.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The smoke from a burning cigarette is a mixture of hot gasses and different sized particles that fills the air with over 4000 chemicals, including 43 carcinogens and over 400 other toxins (Glantz & Daynard, 1991). One of the gasses emitted by cigarette is carbon monoxide, a colorless and orderless poison. By attaching to hemoglobin, the carbon monoxide lessens the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. There are many effects of cigarette smoking on the actual smoker. They include lung cancer and other cancers, cardiovascular malfunctions, strokes, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Cigarette smoking may even lead to changes in the smoker’s appearance such as early wrinkling and yellowing of their teeth. Heart disease and cardiovascular malfunctions are also major effects of cigarette smoking. A chemical in cigarette smoke called glycoprotein attaches to smooth muscle cells inside arteries, causing the interior of these cells to grow. The hollow space inside the artery narrows, which could cause a blockage of the blood flow to the heart and may lead to heart pains or possibly a heart attack. Lung cancer is responsible for 117,000 American deaths per year according to the American Cancer Society (1992). It is the cause of 25% of all cancer deaths and 5% of all deaths (Schaadt, 1992). Most carcinogens are the actual particles in cigarette smoke that may cause lung cancer. The particles include tar, metals (nickel and cadmium), and other chemicals such as benzophyrene and dibenzanthracene. The lung airwaves are c... ...f their stress, it is actually causing harmful effects from them and others. Cigarette smoking causes many types of cancers including lung cancer. Strokes, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema also arise from cigarette smoking. Non-smokers suffer from many of the same cancers and diseases, and often more such as coughing, wheezing, irrated eyes and throat, and asthma. Children living with smokers become passive smokers causing decreases in weight and height. There are many dangers as a result of cigarette smoking not only to smokers, but to non-smokers as well. Gettysburg Address Rhetorical Analysis

On November 19th, 1863, Abraham Lincoln composed one of the shortest yet greatest speeches of all time. In the midst of a Civil war, Lincoln commemorated this address with a hopeful, serious, and empathetic tone. His display of tone can best be seen when he appeals to the audience with ethos and pathos when he announces, â€Å"We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.† Through the speech, Lincoln never addresses the audience as â€Å"you,† instead he uses â€Å"we,† â€Å"our,† and â€Å"us,† to connect with the audience. As President of the United States he addresses the people as one collective group; there is no individual who caused the division between the North and South, however, we must come together as one nation to fix it. He connects with the audience because a majority of the audience had suffered a loss of a family member, further developin g a bond between him and his audience.His compassionate, understanding, and empathetic tone is best supported by the utilization of ethos and pathos. Another place that displayed Lincoln’s tone was in sentence 8 when Lincoln rhetorically parallels and uses a triple by saying, â€Å"But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. † This is significant in that he tells the audience that we should not take any of these actions and that we have to look towards the future. We cannot look back on this mistake, this civil war that should never have happened.We have to come together as a nation. Lincoln effectively uses these strategies because he hopes that since we have been conceived by liberty that we will be borne by a new freedom for a new nation that will come after the Civil War. This new nation will have a better relationship between its government and its people. Lastly, given that Lincoln had only crafted this speech on the back of an envelope during a train ride, the quality does not reflect the circumstances of its composition.Lincoln outlined his speech chronologically: past, present, and future. Lincoln begins his speech by contrasting how our nation was â€Å"conceived in liberty,† giving life to a united nation yet currently there are many soldiers losing their life by fighting against each other. For the future, Lincoln hopes that the living will help make everything all better and construct a nation that will represent equality with a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.Lincoln effectively uses a â€Å"full circle ending† in his outline. He alludes to the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our nation and concludes with an allusion to the Declaration of Independence with a reference to a new birth of freedom. The audience can see his call-to-action as he effectively analyzes the past, present, and future. His hopeful ton e will hopefully inspire the living to help make our nation a united nation. The s Perspective On Alcohol Abuse - 957 Words

Bruffee’s Perspective on Alcohol Abuse Bruffee was unsuccessful in grabbing my attention because his persuasive ways were weak and ineffective. I find his persuasiveness to be imprecise with no correlation between binge drinking and loneliness. For instance, his claims are supported based on personal experiences and personal observations such as students having difficulty making a new group of friends, being desperate to belong and creating an academic background. Unlike Weschler, Bruffee does not use scientific studies, real examples and realistic solutions to adequately connect binge drinkers and introverts; therefore, Bruffee is less successful because he failed to support many of his claims, and his conclusion is incomplete. First of all, there is some credibility in his article trying to capture the reader interest in why binge drinking is an issue on college campuses, in which he provides statistic reports with cause and effect. However, credibility gets lost when he u ses himself as an example of why students join fraternities. Bruffee says that one of the reasons he joined was because he felt desperate to belong. In addition, Bruffee also implies that â€Å"Fitting in† motivates freshmen students to join fraternities and sororities which leads them to binge drinking.
